If you’ve ever caught your dog doing something strange, spinning before lying down, licking their paws, or staring at nothing, you’re not alone.
Dogs do plenty of things that seem weird to humans but are completely normal in the canine world. Many of these habits have roots in instinct, communication, or comfort behavior.
Here are 5 weird dog habits that are actually normal, what they mean, and when they might signal a problem.
1. Spinning or Circling Before Lying Down
You’ve probably seen your dog walk in circles before lying down, as if preparing for bed in an invisible nest. It might look funny, but it’s one of the oldest dog instincts — dating back to their wild ancestors.
Why it’s normal:
- Comfort and safety: Wild dogs used to trample grass to make a flat, safe spot for sleeping.
- Temperature regulation: Circling helps find the most comfortable position, especially on uneven or cool surfaces.
- Instinctive security check: Dogs naturally scan surroundings for danger before resting — even if “danger” is just the living room sofa.
When it’s not normal:
If your dog circles excessively, struggles to lie down, or whines while doing so, it could signal:
- Arthritis or joint pain
- Neurological issues
- Anxiety or restlessness
In that case, see your vet for a mobility or pain check.
