8. Kangal

The Kangal is a legendary Turkish guardian breed, renowned for having the strongest bite force of any domestic dog, measuring an incredible 743 PSI (pounds per square inch). Originally bred in the Sivas region of Turkey, Kangals were tasked with protecting livestock—often sheep and goats—from formidable predators such as wolves, jackals, and even bears.
These dogs are massive, muscular, and highly intelligent, combining raw physical power with a calm, composed demeanor when with their families. However, when faced with a threat, they become fearless protectors capable of repelling some of the most dangerous animals in the wild.
Key Characteristics:
- Origin: Turkey
- Weight: 90–145 pounds (41–66 kg)
- Height: 27–33 inches (69–84 cm)
- Lifespan: 12–15 years
- Notable Traits: Protective, intelligent, loyal, extremely strong bite force.
Why They’re Strong:
- Unmatched Bite Force: At up to 743 PSI, their bite is stronger than that of a lioness, giving them an extraordinary advantage in protection work.
- Fearless Predator Defense: Bred specifically to guard against wolves and bears, Kangals can stand their ground against animals far larger than themselves.
- Muscular Build and Endurance: Their powerful bodies are designed for long patrols and intense bursts of energy when confronting intruders.
- Natural Guardian Instincts: They are deeply bonded to their flocks or families, making them highly committed protectors.
Fun Fact: In rural Turkey, Kangals are still widely used as livestock guardians, often outfitted with spiked collars to protect their necks from predator bites during confrontations.
