7 Medical Expenses Dog Insurance Rarely Covers

6. Experimental or Alternative Treatments (Sometimes Excluded)

Some insurance plans cover acupuncture, hydrotherapy, and chiropractic care, but many still exclude experimental or holistic treatments.

Excluded treatments may include:

  • Stem cell therapy
  • Gene therapy
  • CBD oil or supplements
  • Unapproved medications

Always check the fine print. If your vet recommends new or alternative therapies, insurance may not help unless your provider specifically covers them.

7. Food, Supplements, and Vitamins

Even if your vet prescribes a special diet (like grain-free food for allergies or kidney-support food), most insurance policies will not cover it.

Similarly, supplements and vitamins are usually excluded unless they are an FDA-approved medication prescribed for treatment.

This means:

  • Joint supplements for arthritis → Not covered
  • Prescription dog food for weight loss → Not covered
  • Omega-3 oils for coat health → Not covered

Some premium providers may cover prescription food under limited conditions, but it’s rare.

Why These Exclusions Matter

The reason dog insurance excludes these items is simple: to keep premiums affordable. If every routine and elective expense were included, insurance would cost far more than most owners could pay.

By knowing what isn’t covered, you can:

  • Budget for out-of-pocket costs.
  • Avoid claim denials.
  • Choose add-ons (like wellness plans) if they’re worth it.

In conclusion, Dog insurance is powerful, but it’s not all-inclusive. It rarely covers pre-existing conditions, preventive care, breeding, elective surgeries, dental cleanings, experimental treatments, and food/supplements.

Before signing up, always read the fine print. Compare providers, ask questions, and decide whether add-ons like wellness coverage are worth the extra cost.

Dogs are cute and calm, Cats are not calm and they scratch. That’s why I adopted a dog not a cat, well some cats aren’t like this but most of them are really like this
